#1811 new

Hierarchical Category URLs

Reported by Jonathan | May 23rd, 2012 @ 11:05 AM | in 1.3 Development

Originally this ticket was posted by Brandon Turner and included as part of a set of patches for both hierarchical breadcrumbs and category URLs in ticket #1711:

Hierarchical categories were supported in 1.1. In 1.2, URLs and breadcrumbs no longer support hierarchical categories. Categories appear flat. It would be nice if we could continue using hierarchical urls and breadcrumbs in 1.2.

We accepted the patches for breadcrumbs, but not the hierarchical category URLs because of the potential for breakage it could cause throughout the system. An audit needs run to funnel all category/collection URL use internally when generating URLs for categories or smart collections to use the shopp('collection','url') tag.

Additionally we need to consider adding hierarchical category URL support as an option in Shopp settings. One idea suggested by John Dillick is to change the Pages menu under Setup to Permalinks so that it can cover a broader spectrum of URL-related settings.

Thanks for considering this patch. Let me know if I can help in any way.

FYI: I am running this patch on a production site with no issues. But I agree that more testing is needed before incorporating into core.

    Hello Jonathan and Brandon,

I'm very new to Shopp, so forgive me if i'm asking a stupid question.
So far i've been working with Shopp for 6 weeks and have been able to solve, or find solutions online, for my problems. Only the url of products I can't seem to get it the way I want it to be. I would like it to be: /category/subcategory/productname.html
I'm using Shopp 1.2.3, and the breadcrumbs are exactly the way i'd like the urls to be aswell.

1st Question is, will this patch solve this problem for me?
2nd Question.., how do i install a patch??

Thanks very much for your help!

    Greetings from Holland,

Hi Benno, the patch is a .diff file and describes a set of differences between two or more files. There are various tools you can use to take a .diff file and update your code accordingly - you can even do it manually (minus signs indicate a line that has been removed/replaced and plus signs indicate new/replacement lines).

I agree with Brandon. It would be nice if we could continue using hierarchical urls and breadcrumbs in 1.2
I'm running now into an problem withe the flat url's.

I Have this strange error in my navigation.

    C-->Creed-->Greatest hits goes to

     » V
     » Vandross, Luther
     » GreatestHits

    Or the url http://localhost/song/shop/greatesthits/

I'm a little puzzeld by the navigation structure inside shopp I would expect http://localhost/song/shop/V/Vandross_Luther/greatesthits/

    Or the 'right' url http://localhost/song/shop/C/Creed/greatesthits/
